Global app purchases up 20% from last year, App Store still beats Google Play

Apple’s App Store continues to earn nearly twice as much as Google Play, according to a new report published Tuesday.

Sensor Tower released a new report showing consumers worldwide will spend $133 billion on mobile app platforms by 2021. This represents a 19.7 percent year-over-year growth from $111.1 billion in 2020.

Apple’s App Store accounts for $85.1 billion of the market, an increase of 17.7 percent year-over-year from 2020. Google Play had revenue of $47.9 billion in 2021, a growth of 23.9%. 5 percent on an annual basis.

Apple continues to see about 1.8 times its revenue as an app marketplace from Google.

TikTok is the biggest earner of the year in 2021 and Sensor Tower predicts that the app will generate $3.8 billion in revenue by the end of 2021. YouTube claimed the second highest total revenue. The highest scoring game was ‘Honor of Kings’.

TikTok was the highest earner for the App Store, although Google One was the highest earner in the Google Play Store.

Sensor Tower also notes that global gaming spending continues to grow, now at $89.6 billion, a 12.6% year-on-year growth. Interestingly enough, mobile games account for 78 percent of sales on Google Play, compared to 61.5 percent in the App Store.

Apple recently announced the App Store winners for 2021, with 15 winners across genres like weather, video editing, gaming and more.
